Egyptian Mau cats are believed to have originated in Egypt and are the descendants of cats represented in Egyptian Hieroglyphs. The word mau means cat in the Egyptian language.
The Egyptian Mau breed was nearly extinct by the end of World War II, but thanks to a Russian princess named Nathalie Troubetskoy, it prevailed. Nathalie loved the breed so much that she brought three of the cats with her to the United States in 1956. It is believed that the breed was carefully revived with cross-breeding of other, similar exotic breeds.
Maus have very distinguishing characteristics, including a few that are unique to their breed.
